草津酸性泉は湯川、白砂川を経て吾妻川へと流入する。草津酸性泉由来のレアアース、トリウム、ウランは下流に向かうにつれ、懸濁物に吸着する。ウランは弱酸性領域まで懸濁物への吸着が生じるが、中性～弱アルカリ性領域ではCO3錯体を形成するため吸着は起こりにくくなり、溶存成分として流下する。レアアースは単純にｐH上昇により懸濁物への吸着が促進されるが、軽希土類の方が吸着されにくい傾向がある。
