A study of dynamics of the East African Deaf community-through the description of the prototype sign language-

In 2018 and 2019, (1) individual linguistic description of sign languages of Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzanian (2) comparative study of how similar and different sign languages in East Africa are to each other (contrastive linguistics) were carried out, and reported at the 2020 conference of Japan Association of African Society. In 2020 and 2021, due to the effects of COVID 19, language data collection and interviews could not be conducted sufficiently.

Summary at research subject
The study focuses on the phenomenon of sign language contact in the Deaf community in East Africa: Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania. We try to clarify the dynamism of the Deaf community through education and economic activities by exploring whether there is a proto-sign language that is common to East African sign language.
Description of SDGs activity:Studying the history of Deaf sign language in East Africa reveals the history of education that the Deaf community has received. This research contributes to the education of linguistic minorities.
