The conventional standard for ventilation in schools is that a carbon dioxide concentration of 1500 ppm or less is desirable, and ventilation equipment is provided accordingly. However, for the purpose of preventing the spread of novel coronavirus infections, 1000 ppm or less is now considered desirable (according to a July 2022 recommendation). In this study, we conducted an observational survey of the use of ventilation fans in university classrooms and measured indoor carbon dioxide concentration, air temperature, and relative humidity in FY2023, after the epidemic of novel coronavirus infection had died down. The results showed that even when the existing ventilation system was operated at maximum capacity, the carbon dioxide concentration in the room sometimes exceeded 1000 ppm when the number of people in the room exceeded approximately 60% of the capacity. Even when the number of people in the room was small, the carbon dioxide concentration sometimes exceeded the standard value if the ventilation fan was not used in the immediately preceding class. To prevent infectious diseases, it is necessary to ensure that ventilation fans are used during classes. In addition, maintenance of ventilation equipment is essential, and it is desirable to update the equipment with higher ventilation capacity.
