Slides have become an integral part of today’s educational activities, and the use of proper images in teaching slides can improve students’ comprehension and satisfaction. Finding proper images, however, can be a costly task for the authors of teaching slides. We present a study that explores the uses of Generative Adversarial Nets to generate appropriate images automatically, thereby reducing the costs to find proper images for different teaching materials.

Abstract. The Kashiwa Library (KL), The University of Tokyo, holds a collection of old paper maps over the world, about a half of which were originally collected for the International Map Exhibition 1980 in Tokyo. The collection has 3,200 maps published in the 1970s and 1980s, and 1,260 of them were displayed at the exhibition. The map collection is important because it represents the cartography at the emerging era of new technologies and techniques such as satellite remote sensing, computers and GIS for map production (Arikawa et al., 2016). These maps were donated from the Japan Cartographers Association in March 2016, after their collection and storage by the association since the exhibition. In the Japanese fiscal year 2017, the Center for Spatial Information Science (CSIS), The University of Tokyo, and KL started a cooperative research project to produce a digital archive of this map collection, with support from the University of Tokyo Academic Archives Project that facilitates digital archiving of academic materials owned by various units at the university. This presentation explains the procedure of making our digital archive “Kashiwanoha Paper Maps Digital Archive”. “Kashiwanoha” is the address of the Kashiwa Campus of The University of Tokyo where KL and CSIS are located, and it literally means “oak leaf”.

Abstract. Transit Oriented Development is the approach of urban development which maximizes the land use of residential, business and leisure around the public transit stops. A good TOD system can not only alleviate the contradiction between traffic congestion and insufficient land use for urban development but also significantly improve the convenience of urban residents' work and life. Moreover, while limiting the disorderly spread of the city, a good TOD system can solve the environmental and traffic problems caused by automobiles and promote synergy and integration between the industries. Traditionally, TOD is designed for facilitating the pedestrians to a convenient access to the public transportation systems so as to increase the usage rate of public transports. Despite pedestrians as the target, there are a lot of passengers move to the station via other means such as bus and bicycle. In the previous research, these two kinds of mobility are not included in the evaluation of TOD system as they have a lot of limitation on interacting with the facilities around railway station. In recent years, sharing bicycle becomes popular for solving the problem of the last one kilometer. Comparing to other means of mobility, sharing bicycle is more flexible than bus and has a higher usage rate than private bicycles. In addition, the sharing bike users have a wider access area than the pedestrians. Thus, sharing bicycle is able to play an important role in TOD system. In Tokyo metropolis, there are over 1000 railway stations and more than 50% of residents commute by railway. Nevertheless, the bike sharing system is available only in some specific area, which indicates a lot of room for the development of bike sharing service. In this research, we follow the previous studies of walkability measurement and apply two indicators include road network connectivity and facility accessibility for illustrating how could bike sharing outperforms walking in a TOD system with the case study of Tokyo 23 wards. The result of this research can instruct the government on improving the current TOD system as well as help build a sustainable society.

Recently, many kinds of location-aware applications of smartphone are developed. However, it is difficult to test them for usability in the same way as the non-location-aware ones because of the test environment. For example, in case of supportive applications for emergency situations, the usability test can be carried out only in normal period of outdoor fields. Key competitive technologies beyond the issues will be Augment Reality and Virtual Reality. We focus on advantages of laboratory experiment and present a usability test environment of location-aware apps based on virtual real world using Google Street View. In this paper, we aim at understanding the weaknesses and strengths of this approach. We developed an initial prototype of the usability test environment and a simple map viewer app. The usability test has two conditions from a designated start point: (c1) go to a designated place and (c2) explore the area freely. We observed two participants' behaviors: (b1) movement in the virtual real world, (b2) body motion, and (b3) operation of the map viewer app. From the results, we discuss the better ways to collect these data as well as the weakness and strengths of laboratory-based usability test environment. These outcomes spotlight laboratory survey's strengths of fine grain spatiotemporal data.
