黒鉱鉱床地帯に広く分布する酸性岩と硫酸イオンを含まない人工海水との反応を300℃にて行った.反応初期は,ナトリウム,カリウム,ルビジウム,セシウムが溶出し,マグネシウム,カルシウム,ストロンチウムを疑似時海水から取り込むアルカリ元素ーアルカリ土類元素の交換反応が進行し,反応後期には,一度取り込まれたカルシウム,ストロンチウムが疑似海水中へと再び放出されることでモンモリロナイト化が進行することを見出した.これらの結果より,黒鉱鉱床に大量に存在する硫酸縁鉱物は,モンモリロナイト化後期課程以降に形成されたものと推測される.

草津酸性泉は湯川、白砂川を経て吾妻川へと流入する。草津酸性泉由来のレアアース、トリウム、ウランは下流に向かうにつれ、懸濁物に吸着する。ウランは弱酸性領域まで懸濁物への吸着が生じるが、中性~弱アルカリ性領域ではCO3錯体を形成するため吸着は起こりにくくなり、溶存成分として流下する。レアアースは単純にpH上昇により懸濁物への吸着が促進されるが、軽希土類の方が吸着されにくい傾向がある。
