In recent years, due to the demand for miniaturization and weight reduction of magnetic devices such as in-vehicle drive motors, the authors have focused on miniaturizing motor drive systems through the fusion of devices. In this paper, we propose an integrated motor structure combining a step-up reactor and a motor for a motor drive system using a step-up DC/DC converter. Comparing the integrated structure of the proposed step-up reactor and motor with a conventional motor by reluctance network analysis (RNA), we find that the proposed model can improve output in the high-speed range.

Permanent magnet motors use powerful neodymium sintered magnets, which contain dysprosium (Dy), a heavy rare earth, to improve the coercive force in general. We have been studying heavy rare earth-free motors using bonded magnets. In this paper, the torque characteristics of a motor using Dy-free samarium-iron-nitrogen (Sm-Fe-N) bonded magnets were calculated using the finite element method, aiming for torque characteristics comparable to those of a motor using neodymium sintered magnets. This study shows that a motor using Sm-Fe-N bonded magnets can output torque close to that of a motor using neodymium sintered magnets by changing the magnet arrangement of the rotor from a V-shape to a U-shape to increase the magnet surface area and to eliminate leakage flux at the flux barrier.

This paper presents an investigation into the usefulness of a motor with an asymmetric pole structure based on a prototype rotor using samarium-iron-nitrogen bonded magnets. Comparing the torque characteristic of the proposed asymmetric-pole motor with that of a conventional motor using a neodymium sintered magnet, the maximum torque of the proposed motor increased by 12%. Furthermore, a comparison of efficiency characteristics showed that asymmetric motors have better efficiency characteristics than conventional motors in the high-load and low-speed ranges. It was found that an asymmetric rotor structure with a complicated magnet shape negatively affects the efficiency characteristics in the high-speed operating region.

In this paper, we designed an axial gap induction motor with a synchronous speed of 6000 rpm and a power density of more than 1 kW/L for drones by applying the proportional increment method, which decides the allocation of electric loading and magnetic loading, to the axial gap induction motor. The designed motor was analyzed by reluctance network analysis (RNA), which has a proven to be a useful method for analyzing induction motors. It was confirmed that an axial gap induction motor with a rotational speed of 5850 rpm and a power density of 1.39 kW/L could be designed.

Distance cartograms are deformed maps in which the distance of each of the preselected point pairs in the geographic map is changed in step with a specified value such as a travel time. In distance cartogram construction, the preselected points are fixed in the first step whereas the locations of other points are converted in the second step. This paper proposes a new point location conversion method for the second step. The conversion process is modeled as a phenomenon in a three-dimensional vector field. Each point in the geographic map is connected with the corresponding point in the cartogram by a streamline of the field. The connection relationship becomes a smooth homeomorphism required in distance cartogram construction. The experimental results demonstrate its effectiveness.

To reduce vibration, overshoot, and tracking error of the rotor in an open-loop micro-step drive of a stepping motor, we propose a novel pre-compensator using a low-pass type filter without control delay. The pre-compensator consists of a low-pass filter that removes the natural frequency component causing the vibration and a zero-phase filter that removes the control delay. Finally, a position control experiment demonstrates the validity of the pre-compensator.

Distance cartograms are deformed maps in which the distance of each of the preselected point pairs in the geographic map is changed in step with a specified value. In distance cartogram construction, the preselected points such as train stations are fixed in the first step, and other points such as those comprising railroads are fixed in the second step. This paper proposes a new point location conversion approach for the second step. In the approach, a triangle in the geographic map which consists of two points already fixed in the first step and a point to be fixed in the second step, is converted into a similar triangle in the cartogram. The experimental results demonstrate its effectiveness.

This paper proposes a cartogram construction method to visualize the relevance of the motion-characteristic distribution of Japanese folk dances to the geographic elements of regional communities in which the dances have been passed down. We use motion capture data of the dances to quantitatively extract their motion characteristics. To systematically organize the cartogram construction process, we adopt a hierarchical model representing the relationship among motion capture data, folk dances, and settlements in which the dances have been passed down. Different cartogram types are selected for different levels in the hierarchical model, and, thereby, a hybrid of circle and distance cartograms is provided. We show that an algorithm to locate the constituents of the hierarchical model in the above hybrid cartogram can be obtained by slightly modifying the existing circle cartogram construction algorithm. On the other hand, we develop another new algorithm to locate geographic elements other than the constituents of the hierarchical model in the hybrid cartogram. The results obtained by analyzing the Furyu type folk dances passed down in Akita Prefecture demonstrated the effectiveness of the proposed method.

To suppress the rotor oscillation when positioning a stepping motor, we propose a novel scheme that automatically tunes the pulse timings in back-phasing damping using a neural network, from the input of only a step response. Here, the network is learned from the response and its timings for a few loads. To validate the scheme, the drives that satisfactorily damp the rotor oscillation are demonstrated using the timings estimated with unknown loads attached.

In this paper, we propose a method for improving the positional accuracy of a stepping motor in micro-step drive by just modifying a reference angle using the proposed pre-compensator. For a given reference angle, the pre-compensator outputs the modified reference, which cancels the positional error due to the torque ripples and friction. To validate this method, position control experiments were carried out with and without the pre-compensator. The results demonstrate that the positional accuracy of micro-step drive with the pre-compensator is significantly better than that without the pre-compensator.

This study proposes a method to systematically visualize the motion-characteristic distribution of Japanese folk dances passed down in a certain area. This is accomplished by adopting an approach that involves analyzing motion-capture data collected from the dances. The visualization process in the proposed method consists of three stages. The first stage is the modeling of the relationship among motion-capture data, folk dances, and the settlements in which folk dances have been passed down. This relationship is modeled as a hierarchical-structure model. The second stage is the extraction of motion characteristics from motion-capture data streams. The motion characteristics of each data stream are summarized as a fourteen-dimensional feature vector. The third stage is the visualization of the motion-characteristic distribution of the dances investigated. Each of the dances is mapped on a two-dimensional scatter plot in accordance with the feature quantities obtained in the second stage. Information on the hierarchical-structure model constructed in the first stage is also displayed. The analysis results for the distribution of Bon Odori dances showed that the proposed method could have almost completely visualized the motion-characteristic distribution of sample folk dances, while also demonstrating consistency with the knowledge of the dances acquired in the previous studies.

This paper proposes a method to obtain a low-dimensional feature vector appropriately representing the characteristics of a given motion-capture data stream. The feature vector is derived based on the concept of phase plane analysis. A set of phase plane trajectories are obtained from the temporal variation of the state variables representing the body-segment arrangement. The information on six motion-characteristic properties is extracted from the shapes of the trajectories, and used as the components of a six-dimensional feature vector. The experimental results showed the effectiveness and limitation of the proposed method.
