Abstract
The effect of 200 kHz ultrasound on scorodite synthesis at 70 °C and 3 h reaction conditions was investigated using sulfuric acidic solutions of various pH (3.0, 2.0, 1.5, 1.0, and 0.0). In contrast to the case of only O<sub>2</sub> gas flow without ultrasound irradiation, oxidizing radicals generated by ultrasound irradiation promote Fe(II) oxidation in solution and precursor, allowing scorodite to synthesize with high crystallinity (>99%), which relates to low solubility, even in strong acid solution at pH 1.0. During synthesis, the particle shape was decided to be polyhedral or spindle type depending on the pH of 0.0–3.0. The spindle-shaped scorodite was probably formed by the reduction in precursor amount produced during the initial stage of synthesis. Furthermore, porous maghemite obtained by alkali treatment of scorodite showed initial discharge capacities of 146 mAh g<sup>−1</sup> (polyhedron) and 167 mAh g<sup>−1</sup> (spindle), indicating that its potential use as a cathode material for lithium-ion batteries. -

<p>A separation and recovery process of precious metals from E-waste was developed using chlorination. Release behaviors of metal elements from incinerated ash of spent printed circuit board were followed during the heat treatment under a chlorine gas stream. Capturing behaviors of volatilized chlorides were also followed when the chloride gases were supplied to the bed of carbon particles. Rate analysis was conducted for the release and capturing behavior of precious metals obtained by changing the treatment temperature and residence time. Gold and silver in the ash was completely released when heated for 1 hour at 1000°C. The total amounts of released gold and silver from incinerated ash were successfully recovered by adjusting the thickness of the bed of carbon particles at 800°C. The rate analysis for the release and capturing indicated that gold showed lower activation energies for both release and capturing reactions than those of silver.</p>

<p>This study investigated an effective method to desorb CO<sub>2</sub> from low-concentration (0.2 mol/L) monoethanolamine (MEA) solutions using calcium chloride (CaCl<sub>2</sub>) and ultrasound irradiation at 25 ºC. The pH value of the solution had a large influence on the desorption ratio of CO<sub>2</sub> from MEA solution under ultrasound irradiation. CO<sub>2</sub> was successfully desorbed up to pH8.2, and it was impossible to desorb CO<sub>2</sub> at pH over 8.2. It was clarified that CO<sub>2</sub> desorption by ultrasound irradiation is useful for the concentration of MEA solution of up to 2.0 mol/L, because the pH rises above 8.2 when the concentration of MEA solution is increased to above 2.0 mol/L. It also became evident that the addition of small amount of CaCl<sub>2</sub> further increases the amount of CO<sub>2</sub> desorbed during ultrasound irradiation.</p>

<p>Mercury forms in fly ash and desulfurization gypsum produced from the coal-fired power plant were analyzed. A combination of temperature programmed desorption (TPD) and cold vapor atomic absorption spectrometry (CVAAS) was applied and the optimum operating condition was determined to clarify the forms of mercury. TPD curves of mercury obtained for the ash and gypsum were analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively with comparing to the peak temperature and linear combination of TPD curves of model mercury compounds. The results indicated that mercury in the desulfurization gypsum was mainly composed of HgCl2 and the adsorbed one by unburned carbon.</p>

<p>Activated carbon was prepared from high ash Mozambican coal by chemical activation through K<sub>2</sub>CO<sub>3</sub> impregnation and later tested for adsorption of heavy metals from aqueous solution. The effect of activation temperature, impregnation ratio on BET surface area, pore size and pore volume were discussed. It was observed that the activated carbon prepared at a reaction temperature of 800 °C and impregnation ratio of 1:1, showed larger specific surface area of 895 m<sup>2</sup>/g and pore volume of about 0.4 cm<sup>3</sup>/g. The capacity to remove zinc, and chromium from aqueous solution was tested by batch experiments carried out at room temperature in 100 mL Erlenmeyer flasks. The adsorption percentage of Zn was satisfactory, reaching about 97.8% at contact time of 1 hour while for Cr the percentage of adsorption was lower, attaining only 10.8% at the end of 1hour experiment.</p>

<p>In a series of studies on development of an advanced desulfurization process of heavy hydrocarbon resources under mild conditions without pressurized hydrogen and catalyst, removal behavior of organic sulfur was investigated for a coal extract by using sulfur free imidazolium type ionic liquid. Sulfur removal progressed with increasing number of extraction step and 87% of sulfur removal was achieved after the fifth treatment. The coal extract could be recovered at high yields from the ionic liquid phase by back extraction with 1-methylnaphthalene.</p>

<p>石炭中の無機および有機硫黄を穏和な条件下で効率的に事前脱硫する技術を開発するため,炭化度が異なる5種類の石炭について過酸化水素による酸化脱硫を行った。室温にて石炭試料を過酸化水素中で2 h撹拌すると,無機硫黄の黄鉄鉱硫黄と硫酸塩硫黄が固相から完全に除去された。有機硫黄も同時に除去され,例えば低炭化度の褐炭では84%の有機硫黄が除去された。固相から除去された硫黄は硫酸塩として過酸化水素水溶液に溶解した。石炭中のチオフェン型硫黄は,過酸化水素処理の間にスルフォキシドとスルフォンに変わることがXANES分析により明らかとなった。チオフェンの除去率は石炭化度が高い石炭ほど低く,原炭の芳香族炭素指数との間に明確な相関があることが確認された。</p>

Ultrasound-assisted Oxidative desulfurization of bitumen

Bitumen contains a high percentage of sulfur (about 4.6 wt %). A hydrodesulfurization method is used to remove sulfur from bitumen. The drawback of this method is the requirement for a high temperature of >300 degrees C. Most of the sulfur in bitumen exists as thiophene. Oxidative desulfurization (ODS), involving oxidizing sulfur using H2O2, then removing it using NaOH, allows the removal of sulfur in thiophene at low temperatures. We removed sulfur from bitumen using ODS treatment under ultrasound irradiation, and 52% of sulfur was successfully removed. Additionally, the physical action of ultrasound assisted the desulfurization of bitumen, even at low H2O2 concentrations. (C) 2017 The Japan Society of Applied Physics

Utilization of ultrasonic atomization for dust control in underground mining

This study examined dust suppression using water particles generated by ultrasonic atomization (2.4 MHz) at low temperature (10 degrees C). Green tuff (4 mu m), green tuff (6 mu m), kaolin, and silica were used as dust samples. Even though ultrasonic atomization makes fine water particles, raising relative air humidity immediately was difficult at low temperature. However, remaining water particles that did not change to water vapor contributed to suppression of dust dispersion. Additionally, the effect of water vapor amount (absolute humidity) and water particles generated by ultrasonic atomization on the amount of dust dispersion was investigated using experimental data at temperatures of 10, 20, and 30 degrees C. Utilization of ultrasound atomization at low temperature has the advantages of low humidity increments in the working space and water particles remaining stable even with low relative air humidity.
