<p>Polyurethanes are applied as artificial skin materials for medical simulators. There is a difference between human skin and artificial skin for simulators with respect to “puncture resistance.” Based on comments from medical doctors who perform puncture procedures in clinical sites, puncturing human skin is expressed as “low needle resistance,” whereas the artificial skin for simulators is expressed as “high needle resistance.” It is possible to practice medical procedures with a more realistic sensation if the artificial skin’s puncture resistance is brought closer to that of the human skin. In this study, sensory evaluations via needle suturing and quantitative evaluation via measuring devices were performed to clarify the relationship between the puncture resistance force and physical properties of three artificial skin samples for a suture training model made of polyurethanes. The composition and molecular structures of the materials were confirmed using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and nuclear magnetic resonance. The puncture resistance force measurements showed that Regina’s artificial skin: MODEL A was the lowest in three samples. Additionally, we discovered that low Young’s modulus and the amount of plasticizer contributed to the decreasing puncture resistance of MODEL A. This study proposes methods to combine sensory evaluation by humans and experimental data of the materials for the suture training model.</p>

<p>The introduction of zwitterionic groups improves hydrophilicity and antithrombogenicity of the target materials. In this study, chemical modification of hydroxy terminals of hyperbranched poly(Llactide)s (AB2 PLLAs) by glutamic acid (Glu) was performed to introduce zwitterionic hydrophilic groups. The structures of AB2 PLLAs and Glu-esterified AB2 PLLAs (AB2 PLLA-Glus) were confirmed by NMR measurements. The contact angles of AB2 PLLA-Glus were lower than those of AB2 PLLA due to the influence of large number of Glu terminals. Microphase-separated morphology was observed on the film of AB2 PLLA-Glu, which is a promising surface for anti-platelet adhesion.</p>

<p><i>m</i>-Phenylene diamine-containing compounds were synthesized via a one-pot process and subsequently used as new precipitating agents (<b>PA1</b> and <b>PA2</b>). The precipitation of Pd and Pt was studied using <b>PA1</b> and <b>PA2</b> as metal precipitants. While <b>PA1</b> exclusively precipitated Pd from a HCl solution containing Pd, Pt, and base metals, <b>PA2</b> achieved precipitation of both Pd and Pt from the metal-containing HCl solution. Mutual separation of Pd and Pt was achieved by using <b>PA1</b> and <b>PA2</b> in the first and second precipitation steps, respectively. Separation tests at varying agent loadings revealed that Pd and Pt were precipitated by forming of an ion-pair composed of a metal chloro-complex anion (i.e., [PdCl4]2- or [PtCl6]2-) and one precipitating agent molecule (i.e., divalent cation). The stoichiometric ratio of the ion-pairs was in agreement with the atomic ratios estimated from X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy results. Since the precipitation mechanism herein was based on the formation of an ion-pair, the cations of the precipitating agents only recovered Pd and Pt chloro-complex anions when the cations of the base metals were present in the solution. The different hydrophobicities of the precipitating agents enabled mutual separation of Pd and Pt.</p>

<p>The dispersibility of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) in ketone solvents, acetone and methyl ethyl ketone (MEK), was studied. SWCNTs were successfully dispersed in ketone solvents by sonication and the concentrations of the SWCNT dispersions were increased with the sonication time. The size distribution and UV-Vis absorption measurements showed that the SWCNTs in MEK were uniformly and almost individually dispersed. The zeta potentials of the SWCNTs dispersed in ketone solvents negatively increased with the sonication time. Furthermore, the G/D ratios of the dispersed SWCNTs in MEK were decreased as the sonication time increased. The negative zeta potentials and the decrease in G/D ratios are considered owing to introduction of carboxylic acids induced by sonication in ketone solvents. Although the electrical conductivity of the SWCNTs dispersed in MEK was slightly decreased due to the defects, ketone solvents are practicable dispersing solvents for SWCNTs with relatively low boiling points and high accessibility. SWCNT dispersions in ketone solvents would be suitable for antistatic coatings and nano-fillers for polymer reinforcement.</p>

<p>Selective recovery of platinum (Pt(IV)) from palladium (Pd(II))-containing hydrochloric acid (HCl) solutions was studied using 4-(hexyloxy)aniline hydrochloride (HOA). Pt was selectively and quantitatively recovered as precipitates at HCl concentrations of over 4 M. Furthermore, the recovery of Pt was completed in just a few minutes. Since HOA was able to recover Pd as precipitates quantitatively at low HCl concentrations, the mutual separation of Pt and Pd was achieved by changing the concentration of HCl. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) measurements revealed the formation of ion-pairs composed of one metal chloro-complex anion ([PtCl6]2− or [PdCl4]2−) and two anilinium cations.</p>
