(原文):Hybrid aligned ceils were designed using strong and weak polar anchoring surfaces and the LC director distribution was numerically analyzed. When the anchoring is a critical one, LCs align homogeneously or homeotropicly. Such cells have no threshold voltage LCs reorient homeotropicly or homogeneously with very low driving voltage, respectively. © 2018 International Display Workshops. All rights reserved.

We have proposed a hybrid aligned nematic liquid crystal cell using a polymer stabilized technology for Smart glass application. The cell shows a reverse mode scattering property, which is transparent at any viewing angle in a voltage off-state. The cell turns to opaque by applying the voltage and has an asymmetrical scattering property at oblique incident angles. When using the liquid crystal with positive dielectric anisotropy, the oblique incident angle presenting the strong light scattered state is in the opposite direction when using negative dielectric anisotropy. In addition, we apply a dual-frequency liquid crystal to the cell and successfully switch the incident angle which gives the strong light scattering state by the frequency of the applied AC voltage. We expect the proposed devices can be a candidate for smart glass technology which works as a window blind selectively obstructing a midday sunlight.

Homogeneous-Twisted Nematic Transition Mode Liquid Crystal Display by Out-of-plane Field

We have proposed a low driving LCD mode which changes from a homogeneous orientation to a TN orientation by applying out-of-plane field. The LC is sandwiched between weak and strong anchoring surfaces and easy axes of two surfaces are at right angles. LC director distributions and electro optical properties are numerically analyzed. A transmittance of the cell between crossed polarizers is 0% because of the homogeneous orientation in the voltage off state. Tilt and twist angles of LCs simultaneously increase and the transmittance also increases almost to 100% by the applied voltage of 1.5V, subsequently decreases to 0% by the voltage of 2.5 V. © 2017 Proceedings of the International Display Workshops. Polymer stabilized reverse mode cells are prepared by irradiating with UV light through a line-and-space photomask. The polymer density is unevenly distributed in the cell and lower polymer density results in a lower threshold voltage than that prepared using uniform UV irradiation. High polymer density parts contribute to increasing mechanical resistance.
