The advent of World War II in 1940 and the occupation of the Indies by the Japanese military for almost three and a half years were great shocks to residents of the Indies and brought about innumerable changes. However, the commonly reproduced cartoonish image of a nation uniformly suffering under the yoke of arbitrary Japanese military overlords from 1942 to 1945 was not particularly apt. The beloved Indonesian pasar malam festival is assumed to have vanished during the wartime years, as has been explicitly claimed in the case of the Pasar Malam Gambir. In fact, while somewhat unstable during the wartime years, the institution of the pasar malam never really disappeared, and 1943 could even be described as the “Year of the Festival” due to the relatively high visibility of pasar malam around Indonesia. Examinations of newspaper articles and published programs help to show how these festivals continued to be socially, economically, and even administratively important in somewhat new ways, foreshadowing postwar changes.

The history of influenza outbreaks extends back to the colonial era. Notably, the 1918 pandemic, often referred to as the Spanish flu, is estimated to have claimed the lives of approximately 100 million people worldwide. In historical development, influenza outbreaks reappeared from 1957 to 2022 in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, Daegu, South Korea, and even the world. This study uses historical research methods to examine policies for handling influenza so people can take preventive measures to prevent it. The Korean and Indonesian sources used include the collections of Gouvernement Besluit, Staatsblad, Bijblad, Rijksblad, and contemporary newspapers and the Korean Archives will be accessed through the Korean government’s official website, namely, Guksaphyeonchanwiwonhwe (National Institute of Korea) as well as the Royal Notes archive: Collection of Joseon Wangjo Sillok, accompanied by primary sources through FGDs and interviews. This paper proves there has been a delay in the response from the Indonesian government to deal with influenza, in contrast to the South Korean government, which is quicker and more responsive in suppressing the bad implications of influenza.

This article discusses the debate that took place in Negara Indonesia Timur (The State of East Indonesia) regarding a proposal to form a ministry of religion. This article specifically analyzes the reasoning of those promoting and opposing its formation. The main sources of this article are the SEI archives stored in the South Sulawesi Provincial Archives, magazines and newspapers obtained from the Southeast Asia Collection at Leiden University. The debate occurred between Mochtar Lutfi and his colleagues on one hand and Nadjamoeddin Daeng Malewa on the other. According to Mochtar Lutfi, the existence of a ministry of religion is a proof of the state’s partiality to people who adhere to certain religions, especially Islam. As for Malewa, the ministry of religion reflects the decline of a nation. After going through various pressures, the SEI government finally established a Minister of State to deal with Islamic matters during the Second Cabinet of Nadjamoeddin Daeng Malewa. However, it only lasted for four months and dissolved following the end of the Malewa Cabinet. Subsequent cabinets never set up any ministries again dealing with religious matters up to the breakup of the State of East Indonesia.

This paper examines a forgotten novel (1941) featuring a Javanese detective, Raden Soebroto, and mysterious villain, Patjar Koening, presenting an analysis in the context of political scandals, and suggesting that it was shaped by legal risks facing the author and publisher, and inappropriate for readers in politically tense periods like the Japanese occupation (1942-5) or the revolution (1945-9).
