Information and communication technology-based monitoring services for the elderly can be improved by using a monitoring function that automatically detects cognitive decline. Therefore, we developed a system that provides a brief screening for mild cognitive impairment (MCI). This screening is performed by measuring the performance of two tasks completed simultaneously on a tablet device, such as drawing a spiral and counting color changes. First, we used this system to measure and analyze three groups: elderly persons suspected of having MCI, elderly persons with no cognitive impairment, and healthy young adults. We extracted evaluation parameters relevant for determining MCI through analysis. Furthermore, we developed a detection method using the evaluation parameters and performed an evaluation. Cross-validation revealed that the sensitivity and specificity of this method were 90.0% and 75.0%, respectively.

Soft heating is a method of hyperthermia with few side effects. In this study, only the tumor is heated by inductively heating an implant of a thermosensitive ferromagnetic material embedded in the tumor from outside the body. We are developing a wireless temperature measurement system that detects the implant temperature wirelessly by detecting the change in implant permeability from the induced electromotive force of a pickup coil installed outside the body. However, when the distance between the excitation coil and the thermosensitive ferromagnetic material increases, the change in the magnetic field decreases, so a highly sensitive pickup coil is required. In this report, we prototyped a magnetic field application detection unit for verification that integrates an excitation coil and a pickup coil, and evaluated experimentally the validity of the coil shape and installation position.

  • Study of an Automatic Temperature Heating System for Hyperthermia of Implants under Water Cooling

Endo Ayato, Kato Yuta, Mitobe Kazutaka

Transactions of Japanese Society for Medical and Biological Engineering 2021.05 - 2021.05 Japanese Society for Medical and Biological Engineering

In recent years, hyperthermia has been attracting attention as one of the cancer treatment methods with less side effects on patients. In this study, we adopt a soft-heating method in which an implant is injected into a tumor and a high-frequency magnetic field is applied from outside the body to heat the tumor locally. We are developing a treatment system that can wirelessly detect temperature changes in the surrounding magnetic field due to the temperature-dependent magnetic properties of the implant, using induced electromotive force generated in a detection coil installed outside the body. In this study, we implemented an automatic constant-temperature heating system with high/low control that constantly applies a high-frequency magnetic field, and evaluated the validity of the system under the condition that the implant is placed in 37 degrees Celsius constant-temperature water that simulates the inside of the body.

Hyperthermia is one of the methods of cancer treatments. We are investigating soft heating method that injects temperature-sensitive magnetic fine particles into tumor and applies a high-frequency magnetic field from outside the body to locally heat the tumor. Past studies were reported system that can heat constantly and monitor temperature. Temperature rise properties have reported under different distance of Drive coil and voltage. However, Temperature rise properties under different frequency of magnetic field is unknown. In this study, we measured the temperature rise properties and temperature distribution of two induction heating systems with different frequencies using an optical fiber thermometer. As a result, it was confirmed that the heating efficiency was improved by about 6.3 times by increasing the frequency from 129 kHz to 395 kHz under the condition of applying a magnetic field of 3.9 mT magnetic flux density.
